The World is a Small Town

In Chapter 8, Kleon talks about the importance of being nice. It happens to be something I believe extremely strongly in. There is no sense in burning bridges, because you never know who you'll need to work with again. This is especially true of Champaign-Urbana.

Positive energy breeds positivity. If you have negative energy, turn it into art, don't use it against other people. Make sure that people would be excited to work with you!

Following people who are way smarter than you is important. They say you should never be the smartest/most talented in a room, or likely you're not going to be challenged. Don't actually follow people, instead make friends with them. Or follow them on Instagram. Or if they aren't living, follow their work and become profoundly familiar with it. Some of these people for me include:

  • Stephen Hawking

  • Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

  • Janelle Monae

  • Carl Sagan

  • Prince

  • John Stewart

If I had to write a letter to one of these people this is what I'd say:

Janelle Monae,

I wanted to write you this letter mostly to say that I think you're amazing, but also to thank you!

Thank you for being such an inspiring being. The way you live your life seems creative on every level. Your energy translates into everything you create. Your music sounds energetic, your videos are visually stunning and innovative, and your style are all so unique.

Thanks for consistently inspiring me through your projects and by simply being you.

With sincerity and love,

Hilary Pope
